Vodafone Goes DRM-Free
Vodafone has announced something extremely beneficial for all those who regularly download music from the internet. The telecom provider has signed deals with major record companies, so that users can download music without DRM (Digital Rights Management) restrictions.
DRM is an anti piracy measure, which is used by record companies in order to stop the unlawful sharing and downloading of music files. The problem however is that quite often it stops legitimate users from using their own downloads on more than one or two devices. This has been a cause of frustration for many users and has even had the effect of encouraging piracy.
Vodafone is the first mobile company to come up with an offer that will enable users across the globe to download music without DRM restrictions on multiple devices such as laptops, mobile phones, netbooks etc (click for info on broadband free laptop). For those customers who have already bought the albums or tracks in WMA format from the record companies, DRM free upgrades to mp3 are available for free. The record companies included in the deal are Sony Music, EMI and Universal music, and their number could go up as the benefits of the new arrangement become clearer.
Pieter Knook, Director for Vodafone Internet Services said that music plays a vital role in the lives of most of the customers, and with this initiative, they will be able to share and download DRM free music, and enjoy it anytime, anywhere and on any kind of device.
